Chief Executive Officer, The Collective
Joe is the Chairman of the Advertising Standards Board in Kenya, the Vice President of the Pan-African Media Research Organization (PAMRO), a member of the Oversight Committee of the Kenya Audience Research Foundation (KARF), a member of the Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK) and the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK). He received the distinguished Marketing Society of Kenya Warrior Award in 2010.
For the past 21 years Joe has been influential in the advertising and media industry across Africa. He is the former Managing Director of Ipsos Media division in pan-Africa, where he oversaw the operations in 7 African countries and grew the revenue by 30% annually for over 7 years, automated the media monitoring process and managed the development of audience research through the Kenya Advertising Research Foundation (KARF).
Having studied the advertising industry in insurmountable detail over the last 9 years, he founded The Collective in order to serve the market need created by technological advancements in Africa, firstly around mobile telephony and subsequently through Internet and social media growth. The Collective is an interactive ad agency focusing on social media management and digital advertising with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
He has published numerous papers including ‘Is Africa Ready for Advertising ROI Measurement’, ‘Social Media ROI Measurement’, and ‘New Business Models for a Changing Media’ among others. He has sat on the judging panel of the Public Relations Society of Kenya Excellence Awards for 9 consecutive years, was a judge for the Top 40 Under 40 Women in Kenya in 2011, and the Eve Woman of the Year Awards in 2006.
Prior to this Joe was new business lead and account manger at the prominent advertising agency Young & Rubicam Brands, with responsibilities in several African countries and with clients in energy, financial and FMCG sectors as well as national utilities. His clients included Chevron/Caltex, Commercial Bank of Africa, Diageo, Kenya Post & Telecommunications and others.
As a young man, Joe established a creative hot shop, Ingenue Advertising, and acquired accounts including the largest IT company in East & Central Africa, Symphony, and challenger FMCG brands.
Joe was a pioneer of the two-dimensional animation industry in Kenya and produced the countries first ever fusion of character animation with live footage for the Dextrosol Brand in the early 90s, which won accolades and catapulted the brands commercial performance.
He is an active Rotarian and led the Rotary’s Public Image Coordinators who cover Africa between 2010 and 2015, and is the vice chairman of the Rotary International Communications Committee that reports directly to the Rotary International President and Board. He is also the Rotary International Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme and the African Regional Promotions Coordinator for the 2016 Rotary International Convention in Seoul, Korea. He is a Past Assistant Governor in Rotary District 9200, which consisted of 5 countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Eritrea. He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Nairobi East.
Joe is an accomplished classical guitar player, an avid amateur photographer, and enjoys regular golf, basketball and swimming.
